20 tons of avocados stranded at the border

May 22, 2016 by Staff News Writer

A truck carrying 20 tons of avocados remains stuck at the border between Costa Rica and Panama since May 6.

The freighter transports avocados from Mexico to Panama, however, its entrance into Panama was denied after finding out the product was contaminated by a plague.

The truck, driven by two Guatemalan citizens, tried to turn back for returning to Mexico but Costa Rica wouldn’t allow it.

The avocados are rotting due the truck’s refrigeration isn’t longer working. The load should be disposed by any of the two countries, however, authorities at each side don’t agree if the truck is in Panama or in Costa Rica.

According to Santiago Brenes, lawyer of the exporting company, the truck is in Paso Canoas.

However, Francisco Dall’Anese, (Fitosanitario) State Service Director, claims that the truck is in Panamanian soil, therefore Costa Rica doesn’t have to deal with it.

The company’s biggest fear is that the product is rotting and it might not be able to use the truck again. They’re also concerned for the two Guatemalan workers stranded at the site.

While Dall’Anese stressed that Costa Rica is just a transit territory of product shipped to Panama and that Costa Rica will not be used as a dumpster.
