Carlos Alvarado is one of the 100 most influential people of the future

November 13, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The prestigious Time magazine included the President of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado, as one of the 100 most influential people of the future #TIME100Next, for his proposal to deal with climate change.

The former Secretary General of the United Nations Organization (UN), Ban Ki-Moon, was in charge of writing the president’s review, in which he stressed that

his actions serve to remind the world that even small nations can take the lead,”

as the magazine highlights.

On its website, Time published an interview with the president and shows the “behind the camera” of the photo shoot.

The video is accompanied by this text written by Ki-Moon:

Costa Rica is a small country, but its president, Carlos Alvarado Quesada, has shown great ambition in addressing the climate crisis. Recognizing the need to face this existential challenge with innovative and urgent actions. This year, the UN recognized Costa Rica’s pioneering approach and ambitious climate policies with its greatest environmental honor, naming it the UN Land Champion.

Since becoming president in 2018, Alvarado has established a bold path for Costa Rica, setting goals to reform transport, energy, waste and land use. It is based on the rich legacy of sustainable development and ecological growth of its nation.

In an era of populism, isolationism and polarized politics, the defense of the president of the multilateral system and his commitment to find global solutions to global challenges are highly recommended. Their actions serve to remind the world that even small nations can take the initiative.”
