350 volunteers cleaned the beach to help turtles during nesting season

November 18, 2019 by Staff News Writer

This weekend 350 people joined for an important social work: cleaning an area in which the leatherback, hawksbill and golf turtles will spawn soon.

Massive cleaning was carried out in the Camaronal Wildlife Refuge, in the Tempisque Conservation Area in Guanacaste. The volunteers performed a cleaning of branches and other waste so that it is free of obstacles for the turtle nesting.

The Camaronal National Wildlife Refuge is an area of great natural wealth. Some of the most relevant flora are typical trees of the area that serve as nesting sites for many species of birds. In the area there are also animals such as the congo monkey, iguanas, and raccoons.

The refuge was created on May 2nd, 1994, in order to protect mangroves and wildlife.

The cleaning activity was organized by the company Florida Ice & Farm who contacted volunteers, company suppliers, community organizations, the Public Force, the local emergency commission and youth groups in the area.

In addition to cleaning, the volunteers conducted a reforestation operation with 400 trees.
