Turrialba’s activity will continue

May 23, 2016 by Staff News Writer

On May, 20th, Turrialba volcano expelled a column of gas and ashes up to 3 Km in the air. Since then, its activity hasn’t ceased and now it comes with tremors. Experts state this activity pattern will continue.

Eliécer Duarte, volcanologist, points out that the biggest impact of the ashes might show in a few months, in the form of avalanches and floodings, which will likely affect Guápiles, La Rita and nearby areas.

Guillermo Flores, Cartago’s regional director for the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), said they are analyzing the impact and waiting for a report on it. However, the losses in crops are calculated at 55%.
