Former president condemns award to former Cuban ambassador

November 28, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The former president of the Republic, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Echeverría (1998-2002), censored the government of Carlos Alvarado for granting honors to the former ambassador of the Cuban regime in the country, Danilo Sánchez Vázquez.

The former president described this decision as a “disgrace” on which even the chancellor, Manuel Ventura Robles, is silent. CRHoy.com requested an explanation of the motivations and assessments that led the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to honor the former ambassador with the Juan Mora Fernández distinction (the first Head of State of the country).

The former president added that the Decree that constituted this award is clear that it must be delivered to foreigners who have become creditors to their gratitude or should be honored for special reasons of national convenience.

What are the facts that merit gratitude or should be honored for special reasons of national convenience to the Cuban Ambassador? It is granted to the representative of the Cuban dictatorship and they have not been granted recently to ambassadors of democracies,”

questioned Rodríguez Echeverría.

This award was given in silence by the Chancellor of the Republic, Manuel Ventura Robles on Tuesday, in the emblematic Golden Hall of the Foreign Ministry, where the accredited Diplomatic Corps in the country, relatives and friends of the Cuban attended.

Other times, when the government has given this distinction to other ambassadors, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs distributes a press release and photographs to display the event, however, this time the statement was uploaded to the Foreign Ministry’s website on Tuesday at around 7 pm, but it was not sent by email or through the chat that the press office of the institution has with the media through the WhatsApp application.
