San Jose cyclists are mostly men, ages 26 to 35 years old, who own a car or a motorcycle but prefer to ride a bicycle.
This is the profile of cyclists in San José, according to a poll made by the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT for its acronym in Spanish). The study will be used to promote this mean of transportation.
They also found out that 60 percent of people consulted take their bicycles to go to work. On average, they use bicycles 5 days of the week.
The vast majority do not wear helmets, with 87% saying they don’t. When asked about attacks, 84 percent replied they haven’t been assaulted while using a bicycle in the last three years.
This is the main deterrent for not using bikes more, according to 44 percent of respondents is lacking a site at work to park their bikes. The busiest route for bike riders is between Sabana, San Pedro and Curridabat.
The poll was done between April 5 to May 5 and consulted to 2,288 bikers.
