Timber production contributes with 2% of GPD

May 31, 2016 by Staff News Writer

According to a study by the Central Bank of Costa (BCCR), timber production and related activities contributes 2 percent of the country’s GDP.

The report also contains land uses. The forest area grew 4 percent from 2008 to 2013.

However, other kinds of land uses decreased. Crops and livestock areas were reduced by 7 percent and 5.4 percent respectively for the same period. In contrast, urban areas grew 9 percent.

With this study, the central bank begins to record economic activity generated by natural resources exploitation.

The research also shows energy use by economic sectors. The manufacturing sector consumed about 35 percent of power in 2013 and produced about 15 percent of GDP.

Transport and storage sectors used 15 percent of the energy produced, and its contribution to GDP was less than 5 percent.

The computing technology sector was the most efficient in energy use, as it worked with 7 percent of energy and produced 30 percent of GDP.
