CCSS extends Widow’s, Widower’s or Surviving Civil Partner’s pension to LGBT couples

June 10, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The social security administration (CCSS) approved to extend the Widow’s, Widower’s or Surviving Civil Partner’s pension benefits to same-sex couples with same conditions heterosexual couples have.

José Loría, CCSS board member, said the decision didn’t create a new right, but only recognizes a right that has been denied so far to the LGBT community.

Extending this benefit would have a minor impact on the pension system finances, according to an internal study.

The board of directors has yet to announce when the benefit will come into effect.

Two years ago, the CCSS recognized health insurance extension for family members to same-sex couples.
