LGTBI population in Costa Rica condemns senseless hatred

June 13, 2016 by Staff News Writer

After the attack on the Twin Towers on September 11th, 2001, the two biggest attacks to the country have targeted the LGBTI community, including last Sunday’s Orlando massacre at Pulse nightclub.

Hatred and intolerance behind these and any other kind of fundamentalist attack is condemned by Costa Rica’s LGBTI community, as well as leaders of various movements.

Globally, advocates of tolerance and sexual diversity have reacted and Costa Rica was no exception.

This clearly proves that religious fundamentalists and the patriarchy have been spreading hatred against us and against our rights,”

said Marco Castillo, representative of the Diversity Movement in Costa Rica.

José Chavarría, secretary from the group TicOsos (Costa Rican gay bears), also criticized the role of religions and “sects” that make people see them as “sick people with a problem”.

However, Ángel San Casimiro, Alajuela’s bishop, denies that there is hatred against this population in Costa Rica.

The Vatican, on the other hand, condemned the attack and said it was the result of madness and senseless hatred.
