INAMU promotes reforms to address hospital births

June 24, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The National Institute for Women (INAMU) is promoting a series of changes in the way births are addressed in Costa Rican hospitals.

The purpose of the reforms is to fight obstetric violence in hospitals. While it may seem essential, not all medical centers have the necessary resources to meet deliveries in the best way.

INAMU’s CEO, Alejandra Mora, said it is crucial to have maternity wards with birthing chairs, exercise balls, curtains to protect the privacy of women, standing showers with hot water and access to hydration.

They are also working on updating the Guide to Comprehensive Care for Women and Children in the prenatal and postpartum period, in coordination with the departments of Gynecology and Obstetrics from national hospitals and Women’s Hospital, the National Nursing Coordination and other relevant institutions.
