President denies leaving SICA was a tantrum

June 29, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Costa Rica’s return to the Central American Economic Integration System (SICA) will depend on statements from other nations this week in Roatán, Honduras.

We haven’t yet ensured our return, because we didn’t leave on a tantrum, we wanted reforms,”

said president Luis Guillermo Solís, who sent the Finance Minister and first vice-president of the Republic, Helio Fallas to Honduras to represent him.

SICA’s meeting will serve as an opportunity for other countries to define if they want to restructure the system as requested by Costa Rica, and also for Nicaragua to take the pro tempore presidency during 6 months.

Solís restated that Costa Rica was not imposing conditions on Central America, following accusations by Nicaraguan president, Daniel Ortega, who said

Central America is not compelled to do what Costa Rica wants.”
