BiciBus invites people to change the way they get to work

July 4, 2016 by Staff News Writer

BiciBus is a project that began 5 years ago with the main goal of promoting and informing about the possibility of using bicycles as a bus service.

Via WhatsApp, people organized groups with the routes they take to go together from home to work by bicycle.

David Gómez, founder, explained that connectivity was a challenge when the idea came up in 2011.

We found that there are more people willing to use bikes as means of transport and not just for sport or recreation,”

said Gómez.

BiciBus also provides technical advice and support through their Facebook page, to people who want to use this alternative means of transport, as well as workshops on urban cycling, based on experiences of other people and always focusing on strengthening security issues.

We create groups of people sharing routes and schedules to travel together. We use a WhatsApp group called Pizarra BiciBus.”

At the moment, BiciBus’ plan is to reach rural areas where the use of bicycles as means of transport is more common.

Last year there were 67 deaths in bicycle accidents and 90% of them happened due to poor visibility or unsafe maneuvers by the rider, which can be solved with education for people to learn basic things,”

Gómez concluded.
