Every year 47 children are born with congenital syphilis

July 13, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Every year, around 47 children are born with congenital syphilis in Costa Rica. As consequence, authorities have increased prenatal care to reduce that number.

Until 2014, there were recorded an average of 110 annual cases of babies with this problem; however the implementation of better birth controls decreased that number by 50%, as explained by doctor Gloria Tewers, specialist on sexually transmitted deseases.

Tewers added that nowadays pregnant mothers must take a test for syphilis and HIV, which has been a very successful measure.

With this regulation, the specialist affirmed that within 2 or 3 years this disease will be completely eliminated.
