Mayor of Alajuela flirts with presidential candidacy

July 25, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The position of presidential candidate from the National Liberation Party continues to add suitors.

On Saturday, Alajuela’s mayor, Roberto Thompson, told the press he did not rule out running for presidential candidate for the 2018 elections.

The mayor said that for now his work and effort focus on Alajuela and that any electoral movement on his part would be premature at this time. However, the politician clarified that

when you’re in politics you cannot rule out any possibility.”

The politician also pointed out that several sectors of the group told him he could “assume leadership,” and explained that he has not talked with former president Óscar Arias, also a virtual candidate from the PLN and who appointed Thompson as Deputy Minister of the Presidency during his administration from 2006-2010.

So far, the liberationist official candidacy has 3 contenders: former President José María Figueres, former legislator Sigifredo Aiza and lawyer Enrique Rojas. It is rumored that legislator Rolando González is also considering running for president.
