32 surveillance cameras for Cartago

July 28, 2016 by Staff News Writer

From July, 27th the people of Cartago will feel more secure, since the municipality is installing the first Intelligent Video Surveillance Platform in Costa Rica.

Rolando Rodríguez, mayor of Cartago, explained the platform consists of 32 cameras, which represented an investment of ¢ 250 million.

The people of Cartago have always been very conscious about the responsibility they have to support the security forces in their duties, due to the limitations. Several projects have been completed with that goal, including the refurbishment of police stations and now this,”

said Rodríguez.

The cameras cover 8 of the 11 districts in the central canton of Cartago, including Guadalupe, Dulce Nombre, San Francisco and Carmen. The locations were determined according to crime statistics by the security forces and the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ).

The idea with these devices is to count people, detect stolen or forgotten objects, measure the density of the population, marking perimeters,”

added Rodríguez.

The devices operate with or without light, they also have the ability to transmit the video despite the weather conditions and have a range of 500 meters.

The total plan includes 127 cameras that are expected to be ready in a year. Camera feed monitoring will be conducted from the office of Community Safety. However, the devices have warning systems in the event of an incident.

Currently, the province has 63 operating cameras, including the ones that were previously installed.
