Government deports illegal Haitian and sends warning to migrants

August 11, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Costa Rica is willing to be more rigorous due to the immigration crisis that has been hitting hard for months.

Proof of this is the deportation of a Haitian citizen named Thello, who remained here with an irregular immigration status.

Costa Rican authorities suspect Haitian are posing as Africans in their way to North America.

Thello was carrying false documentation. From June 28th he was placed in the center of apprehension for foreigners in Hatillo, where they began the procedures for deportation.

The procedure was performed a few hours after the Presidential House warned of the imminent deportation of those who have an irregular status.

This also happens at a time when the immigration crisis threatens to become more acute. Thousands of Africans and Cubans passed through the country in recent months, in an effort to continue to the United States.

The lack of controls on the Panamanian side and the Nicaraguan government’s refusal to allow the passage of foreigners complicates the approach.

Last month, the Directorate of Migration estimated that some 2,000 African migrants fled the country using coyotes.

In the last three months, the country has received between 50 and 160 migrants a day.
