Beware! Aedes aegypti’s victims are increasing

August 11, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The number of pregnant women infected with Zika virus continues to increase in the country.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Health confirmed that 17 pregnant women were bitten by mosquito Aedes aegypti. Last week 15 cases were recorded.

Some days ago, the Ministry of Health delivered kits to pregnant women from cantons where most zica cases are reported. The package includes repellents and bed nets.

For these women, prenatal care is more complex. Their pregnancies are classified as “high risk” because there is a 14% chance that their babies are born with microcephaly.

However, pregnant women are not Aedes aegypti’s only victims. This week there was a considerable increase in cases including men, women and children.

The number of Costa Rican patients infected with zika went from 351 to 441.

Regarging Chikungunya, cases rose from 1,754 to 1,816, whereas dengue fever cases increased from 11,484 to 12,144.
