Strawberry producers want to revitalize their business

August 12, 2016 by Staff News Writer

A committee aiming to promote straberry’s research, development and innovation was formed by a large number of strawberry producers from Poas in Alajuela, Varablanca in Heredia, Llano Grande in Cártago and La Cima de Dota in San José.

The initiative has the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) and the Foundation for the Development and Promotion of Research and Transfer of Agricultural Technology (FITTACORI).

The key to success is to create a strong organization. It is not just to say what they need, but to know what they have to do, how to work with other useful organizations and do it by using a program as a guide, looking for solutions and making changes to benefit from the opportunities that they have,

explained Jonathan Castro a specialist in innovation, natural resources and climate change from the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) in Costa Rica.

In the event, held at the headquarters of the Institute, 30 producers expressed their desire to have more information about the varieties of strawberry plants, technical assistance, training and financing.

MAG’s idea is that domestic producers present innovative projects that will benefit the sector.
