Alcohol could be strongly related to 7 types of cancer

August 22, 2016 by Staff News Writer

A study, conducted in the last 10 years by the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine at the University of Otago in New Zealand and led by cancer researchers, listed alcohol (regardless the consume) as a causative agent of at least 7 different types of cancer: oral, larynx, esophagus, liver, colon, rectum and breast.

According to this information, the intake of 70 grams of alcohol per week increases the risk of developing breast cancer by 13%, and any type of cancer, by 5%.

It has been suggested that alcohol, in minor amounts, may offer some protection against cardiovascular disease. However, the results indicates that the level of protection (if any) compared to the risk of cancer, is small,

said Paula González, a cancer researcher in Costa Rica and president of the Agency for Biomedical Research (ACIB).

The expert states that this information should be a wake-up call to health authorities worldwide,

to take more aggressive action is mandatory. Just talking about cancer, alcohol consumption was associated with 500,000 deaths in 2012″

declared González.
