Volcán Tenorio National Park does not have enough staff

August 23, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Río Celeste is the main attraction of Volcán Tenorio National Park, located between two provinces (Guanacaste and Alajuela) and among 4 cantons (Tilarán, Cañas, Upala and Guatuso).

In the last 5 years visits have increased. While around 2015, 60,000 domestic and foreign tourists went to the area, during 2016, that figure was reached.

Marjorie Rojas, manager of the park, thinks that it is a consequence of the advertisement made by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), inside and outside the country. However, according to her, the problem is they are not able to serve all the people because there are only 6 workers in the place. She also informed that Solís’ administration urged them not to hire more people.

To get an idea, just at Easter the park was visited by 6,000 people. during one day, 1,800 tourists arrived and they had to close the place.

In order to meet the demand, Rojas estimated that about 22 people would be needed.

According to the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE),  from 2017 to 2018 more than 362 vacancies will be offered.
