Tamarindo’s fight against Zika

August 23, 2016 by Staff News Writer

This is a new week for a new battle against the mosquitoes that carry dengue, chikungunya and zika, affecting thousands of people throughout the country.

Costa Rica reported 522 cases of zika, almost 2,000 of chikungunya and it’s approaching to 13 thousand dengue cases. Actions from the population are urgent, since breeding larvae and eggs continue to thrive everywhere.

Therefore, next Wednesday, Guanacaste (which reported 19% of cases zika) will held a preventive campaign to collect debris that can become breeding grounds for Aedes aegypti.

Officials from different entities and residents of Playa Tamarindo accepted the call from the Chamber of Tourism of the area to unite to collect tires, bottles, containers and anything that can incubate mosquito larvae.

According to Hernán Imhoff, President of the Chamber, this is the second campaign organized this year and it’s expected to be more successful.

The campaign will be held on August 24th from 7:00 a.m.

To participate, there is no need to travel to Guanacaste. Making a difference from home is enough to fight dengue, chikungunya and zika. Just follow these tips from the Ministry of Health:

-Keep garbage bins and buckets closed
-Clean containers and tires
-Choose soil over water for plants
-Fumigate
-Check your neighbor’s house for breeding sites
