Iran is interested in Nicaraguan inter-oceanic canal

August 24, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Chinese company HKND is in charge of constructing the Nicaraguan Interoceanic Canal. It expects to complete the work by 2020. The planned shipping route should be 3 times larger than the Panama Canal, It will be an investment of 50 millions dollars. However, they should have begun the work two years ago.

Rosario Murillo, Nicaraguan government spokeswoman, said that cabinet members explained the Iranians’ investment opportunities in the canal, along with other projects.

On Tuesday, Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iranian Foreign Minister, during his visit to Nicaragua, expressed Iran’s interest to be involved in the construction of the Canal.

According to Murillo, Mohammad visited the congress, where he was welcomed by members of Frente Sandinista, and he scheduled a meeting with President Daniel Ortega before leaving to Ecuador.

Iran and Nicaragua strengthened their diplomatic relations after Ortega’s return to power in 2007. Both countries kept international contact during the Sandinista revolution in the 1980s.
