2 forest rangers will be in custody on suspicion of facilitating marijuana cultivation

August 26, 2016 by Staff News Writer

2 forest rangers surnamed Morales and Beita will be in custody for the next 6 months on suspicion of facilitating marijuana cultivation to a drug-trafficking organization at La Amistad National Park.

Along with them, 5 more people will be imprisoned: 3 men surnamed Vargas and 2 women surnamed Ortega and Montoya.

All of them were arrested on Monday in raids conducted by the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) in Pérez Zeledón and Buenos Aires of Puntarenas.

They had nothing to do with the drug-trafficiking family, but they were an important part of the gang,

declared the judicial police.

The investigation started 8 months ago, but according to Walter Espinoza, director of the OIJ, this band has operated since 2011.

In the national park, there were 14 sites dedicated to marijuana cultivation, which was transferred to Pérez Zeledón and Valle Central.

The Vargas brothers are related to a similar case that took place in 1996, when they were arrested for transfering marijuana to Europe.

They served a sentence and 21 years later, they repeated their actions.
