Should Costa Rica be worried about the construction of the Nicaraguan canal?

August 29, 2016 by Staff News Writer

On August 23rd, during his visit to Nicaragua, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wished that Nicaraguan government and several private companies participate in the construction of the inter-oceanic canal.

As consequence, a question arises: should Costa Rica be worried?

It is not only about the construction of the canal. Nicaragua has currently bought military weapons to Russia. In addition, Iran is one of the countries that owns nuclear weapons.

The Foreign Ministry declined to speak on the subject.

Right now, the Costa Rican Foreign Ministry will not refer to these statements as it would be to speculate. Costa Rica must talk about facts,

declared the minister.

According to political scientist Francisco Barahona, since it is a Nicaraguan exclusive issue, Costa Rica should keep its distance, no matter Nicaragua’s partners to build this work, which is delayed by two years. However, domestics should be aware whether it can generate some kind of ecological concern to the country.
