Thousands of migrants went through Darién Gap to reach Costa Rica

August 29, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The immigration crisis plaguing the region has scary figures: only in recent months –since the situation started last November- 9,000 migrants who passed through the Darién Gap to reach Panama and continue to Costa Rica have been reported.

The Darién Gap is ranked as one of the most-difficult-access mountainous areas in the region. It is a jungle that divides Central and South America.

Africans, Cubans and Haitians crossed the border between the two countries with one goal: reaching the United States.

The Panamanian Ministry of Security provided data to the press in his country, which indicates that more than 7000 migrants continued their way into Costa Rican territory.

Most of the migrants are Haitian citizens, who pretended to be Africans and went to Brazil to undertake the dangerous journey.

The figures of this crisis seem to harden as the data indicates that last month Costa Rica deported 253 Cubans with irregular immigration status.

Last week, President Luis Guillermo Solís said that according to the reports, the situation will worsen in the coming weeks and did not foresee an immediate end to this crisis.

Last month, Costa Rica announced that it would toughen immigration controls to prevent an escalating situation.
