Mass absence of Legislators avoids Congress sessions

September 1, 2016 by Staff News Writer

A massive absence of legislators prevented the legislative plenary session to be held on Wednesday.

In all, 22 of the 57 lawmakers were absent, 7 from the National Liberation Party (PLN), 5 from the Social Christian Unity Party (PUSC), 4 from Frente Amplio (FA) and 3 from the Citizen Action Party (PAC).

According to the president of the Congress, Antonio Álvarez, between 7 and 8 legislators are participating in the celebrations of the Day of Afro-descendants and Afro-Costa Rican Culture, in Limón.

Álvarez added that others requested to leave for health reasons and two “were stranded on the way.”

The president of the Congress said that quorum is “urgent” to discuss substantive motions to the bill against tax fraud on Thursday, otherwise, they will have sessions on Friday and Saturday.
