Referendum for a new Constitution is on the table

September 6, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Alex Solís, a lawyer who promotes the creation of a new Constitution to rule the country, made the formal request to legislators to convene by referendum the establishment of a Constituent Assembly.

Solís is backed by recognized leaders such as former President Luis Alberto Monge, Deputy Comptroller Silvia Solís, lawyers Fernanda Roldán, Johana González and Jeffry Chinchilla, PUSC legislator and President of the Legislative Assembly, Rafael Ortíz Fábrega and former President of the UNA, Olman Segura Bonilla.

Other supporters are Leda Picado Godínez, the student Alexandra Luna Carvajal, the director of the Master of Human Rights in UNED, Francisco Barahona Riera, writer Fernando Araya Rivas, and former President of the Legislative Assembly, Walter Coto Molina.

To overcome the crisis in a peaceful, inclusive and democratic manner, we are launching the constitutional process, in order to build a new Costa Rica through the convening of a Constituent Assembly and the promulgation of a new Constitution. This is the most appropriate way to bring people together around a large common project, transforming the country and move towards a system of life and a better world for all procedures,”

said Alex Solís.

The new Constitution must be enacted in a non-extendible period of 20 months after the beginning of the sessions of the Constituent Assembly, and would take effect on September 15th 2021, along with the celebration of 200 years of independence.
