The Legislature passed a bill that aims to prevent and establish corrective measures against bullying.
The initiative, promoted by legislators Fabricio Alvarado, from Restauración Nacional, and William Alvarado, from Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC), was approved by the Comisión con Potestad Legislativa Plena Primera (the Commission with legislative Power).
The new law aims to guarantee the physical, moral and psychological integrity of students in all public schools and to strengthen prevention and intervention programs against bullying.
It also intends to strengthen teachers’ skills to prevent and intervene in cases of bullying.
In addition, sanctions will be imposed to those administrative officials of educational institutions who ignore bullying.
The law includes cyberbullying: the use of information and communication technologies to bully someone.
It also establishes corrective measures for students who bully, but it does not establish penalties.
