Agreement will benefit 6,000 coffee producers

September 12, 2016 by Staff News Writer

As part of the celebration of Coffee Day, held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture this morning, an agreement between GIZ (German International Cooperation Agency), MAG, the Ministry of Environment and Icafé was signed. This agreement allows them to have access to more than $ 11 million and will benefit 6,000 coffee producers across the country.

The cooperation will facilitate the management of 25,000 hectares of coffee under environmentally friendly conditions and the processing 50 grain benefits.

Minister of Agriculture, Luis Felipe Arauz, said this is an extension of Nama Café, a program that aims to help coffee farmers be more efficient and competitive, emit less greenhouse gases (GHG) and become more resilient to the effects of climate change.

The contribution of European cooperation, amounting to 7 million euros will promote a further implementation of pilot programs already developed in Costa Rica, with support from other donors such as the IDB-MIF, in coordination with Icafe and Fundecooperación.

A national counterpart for nearly $ 3.4 million adds up to this international grant, donated by Icafe, MAG and MINAE. The project should be completed in 2019.
