Services, manufacturing and agricultural activities improve Costa Rican economy

September 13, 2016 by Staff News Writer

According to the Monthly Economic Activity Indicator (IMAE) from the Central Bank, during the first 7 months of 2016 the economy grew at an annual average rate of 5.0% and a year-on-year rate of 5.1%.

The production’s dynamism is due to the favorable development of the service activities, manufacturing and agriculture.

The service industries had a growth of 3.18%, with a major influence in communications, transport, business services and financial intermediation.

Furthermore, manufacturing presented a growth of 9.5%, mainly due to the performance of companies of special regimes and the increase of the external demand for products such as medical and dental instruments, orange juice, pineapple, among others.

Agricultural activity grew 3.8%. The best performance comes from bananas, coffee and pineapples, as well as the production of dairy and poultry.

On the downside, the construction activities recorded a fall of 14.9% in contrast with the 21.3% growth during last year.
