More than 9,987 migrants have entered Costa Rica

September 14, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Near 4,500 migrants, mostly Haitians, are in Costa Rica on their way to America. In addition, a government source informed that 100 migrants enter the country everyday.

Communications Minister Mauricio Herrera said that the Costa Rican government is trying to help the migrant population while a solution is found so they can continue their journey. However, local residents are worried for the massive presence of foreigners in the border.

The main concern is the border post of Peñas Blancas, where 2,500 people have agglomerated: they have invaded lands and remain in precarious conditions in plastic tents.

Herrera explained that the United States donated tents so that their health and safety conditions can improve.

The minister stated that since April, Costa Rica has received 9,987 people, mostly Haitians: 4,527 remain in the country due to Nicaragua’s refusal to allow them to pass through its territory.

Most of them left Costa Rica with the help of ‘coyotes’ to continue their journey to the north. As consequence, migrants are agglomerated on Mexico-the United States border while others have been arrested in Central American countries.
