Costa Rica denies Russian weapons transfer to Nicaragua

September 15, 2016 by Staff News Writer

On Wednesday afternoon, information, videos, pictures and even unofficial audio circulated saying that Costa Rica was escorting Russian weapons from Sarapiquí to the border with Nicaragua.

The Minister of Security, Gustavo Mata, was emphatic denying such rumors and any other version that does not conform to reality.

The authorities explained that this is a routine custody, performed every week or so to prevent any accident due to illegal gunpowder transport from China.

The highly explosive material is transferred into a container that entered through Mopín and that goes to a company located in La Garita de Alajuela.

This is part of the protocol of Operational Firearms and Explosives Unit of the Directorate of Specialized Units (DUE) Public Security.

These trucks are kept in order to avoid jeopardizing people because they are explosive products and their transfer must be careful to protect the life and safety of people,”

said Carlos Hidalgo.
