Christiana Figueres was a special guest in the Reventazón Hydroelectric Plant’s inauguration

September 19, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Former Secretary of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change Christiana Figueres led the opening of Reventazón Hydroelectric Plant.

Figueres was in Siquirres, Limón, as a special guest of the fourth turbine’s starting operations, which will lead the hydro-electric power plant at its full capacity and it will aim to maintain the use of renewable sources in Costa Rica.

In addition, her father, former president José Figueres Ferrer, was an important part of the event, since he was one of the promoters of the creation of the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE).

Karen Olsen, Figueres’ widow and Christiana Figueres’ mother, and Mariano Figueres, chief of the Directorate of Intelligence and Security, were part of the inauguration.

Reventazon hydroelectric plant is the largest plant in Central America and it was built in just six years, at a cost of 1,400 million dollars.
