Solís talked about women’s economic empowerment, migration and terrorism

September 21, 2016 by Staff News Writer

President of the Republic Luis Guillermo Solís delivered a speech before the United Nations General Assembly. He focused on the problem of migration in the world, economic empowerment of women, climate change and concerns over terrorism and North Korea’s nuclear weapons.

The Costa Rican president was part of the high-level panel for the economic empowerment of women. It was established by Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon in March 2016. CEO of IKEA-Switzerland Simona Scarpaleggia, as well as leaders from the private sector and civil society are part of this panel.

I am fully convinced: the economic empowerment of women is necessary to achieve equality between men and women,

stated Solís during his presentation.

Costa Rica sent a message to 155 countries that keep restrictions for women so them don’t get involved in economic activities: he urged them to enter an era of gender equality.

the president highlighted the fact that many women take unpaid jobs and there are 700 million women who do not have the same employment opportunities as men.

Regarding migration, Solís declared that it is necessary to protect and respect human rights of those people who have been forced to leave their countries and families.

Finally, the president condemned the acts of terrorism taking place around the world, as well as the nuclear tests carried out by North Korea.

Solís welcomed the restoration of relations between America and Cuba and Colombia’s peace deal between the government and the FARC.
