Cost of living and infrastructure: stone in the shoe of tourism

Poor road infrastructure and an increasing costs are making the tourism industry in Costa Rica less competitive. In particular Costa Rica is viewed as expensive in comparison to Panama and Ecuador. Increasing costs also make Costa Rica less attractive as a retirement destination. According to Tatiana Cascante, executive director of the National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur) an improved highway infrastructure would reduce transfer delays.
