An amendment aims to facilitate the process of adopting a person of legal age

September 28, 2016 by Staff News Writer

An amendment to the Family Code, submitted to the legislative, aims to facilitate the process of adopting a person of legal age.

The initiative was presented by legislator Emilia Molina, former head of Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC).

The project would amend Article 106 of the Family Code with the purpose of reducing the age difference between the adopter and adoptee to 10 years when the latter is an adult.

Molina said that in Costa Rica adopting adults is allowed, but a 15-year difference is required.

In her opinion, this often makes it impossible to consolidate the process.

The lawmaker said that the proposal does not intend to modify the 15-year difference between adopted and adopter when the first is minor. The amendment would only apply to adults.
