Costa Rica and Panama are working together to solve the migration problem

October 10, 2016 by Staff News Writer

President of Costa Rica Luis Guillermo Solís and his countpart from Panama, Juan Carlos Varela, met on October 7th and they reached a series of conclusions to look for a solution to the illegal migration problem that has been affecting both countries for several months.

Among the main agreements, it highlights their intention to get help from other countries that accept migrant groups. This situation is a priority, as long as their human rights are guaranteed. However, any country has been mentioned.

They also aim to create a regional, voluntary fund to support countries and serve these flows.

In addition, it was decided to create a high-level team which will consist of representatives from the security, migration and foreign authorities in order to implement these and other actions and to deal with the flow of Haitian citizens heading North.

They also agreed to strengthen the strategic, operational and tactical cooperation to desmantle drug-trafficking groups and criminal gangs.
