The Supreme Court rejected to increase donations to 50%

October 19, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The Supreme Court rejected to increase to 50% donations to be imposed on judicial pensions approved by the institution.

President of the Court Zarela Villanueva declared that increase the donation to that percentage would be confiscatory and unconstitutional.

The statement was made at a hearing before the Special Committee on Pension Plans from the Legislature, which has several reforms to the pension scheme of the judiciary.

Under the proposal, pensions exceeding 75% of the highest salary of the Court would pay a contribution of up to 50%.

Villanueva explained that contributors currently pay 11% to the pension fund, 5% to the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) and they also pay income tax, which ranges go from 10% to 15%, depending on the limits established by the Ministry of Finance.

She insisted that the contribution should not exceed 20%.

Villanueva also noted that the Court disagrees with the creation of the Administrative Board of Retirement and Pension Fund of the Judiciary, to be financed with a 9% share from the employees’ salaries.
