Antibiotics: less is more

October 21, 2016 by Staff News Writer

They are very valuable to be used indiscriminately. In addition, its abuse or misuse can have serious consequences. This is not the plot of a fiction film, it is one of the things that threaten the health of millions of people worldwide.

Antibiotic resistance occurs because bacteria change and become inflexible to these treatments, that want to cure the infections they cause. The reasons associated with it are:

-Excess antibiotic prescribing.
-Patients who have not finished their treatment.
-The overuse of antibiotics in livestock breeding and fish.
-Inadequate infection control in hospitals and clinics.
-The lack of hygiene and poor sanitation.
-The lack of development of new antibiotics.

As a result, the World Health Organization (WHO) urges people to be more aware of its use.

According to the WHO, the antiobioticos should be used to treat bacterial infections only with the prior prescription of a professional physician or veterinarian, if the affected is an animal. Other recommendations made by the Organization are:

-Always take the full treatment, even when you feel better.
-Never share antibiotics with other people.
-Wash your hands frequently in order to prevent infections and avoid contact with sick people.
