SUTEL would no longer set tariffs for mobile services, fixed Internet or international roaming

October 24, 2016 by Staff News Writer

If the Superintendence of Telecommunications (SUTEL) manages to define the 11 relevant markets, the State would no longer set tariffs for mobile services, fixed wireless or international roaming.

Even though SUTEL would not establish the tariff regulation, it would guarantee the quality of the services provided.

When asked about this issue, Marcelo Jenkins, minister of Science, Technology and Telecommunications, confirmed that he is in favor of that statement, however he urges serious study based on updated data.

We ask to define the important operator in each of these markets. The current numbers are from 2009 and the reality has greatly changed. So, the first step is to update the data,

stated the minister.

In August, the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE) request the exact sae thing.

The possible implications of this definition does not go unnoticed. For instance, members of Frente Amplio (FA) consider that the services could go unregulated and it would increase the possibility of charging for download Internet.
