A bill aims to regulate the size, color and placement of advertisements on public roads

October 25, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Can you imagine San José without giant billboards? A bill aims to regulate the size, color and placement of advertisements on public roads.

This is Further Adjustment Installation on External Visual Communication project presented by legislator Luis Vásquez.

The initiative was presented in 2014 and it already has 7 alternative texts. The bill aims to control the visual pollution and prevent road accidents caused by advertisements.

The Department of Inspections and Demolition from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) confiscates about one thousand advertising pieces located on public roads each year. Although there is a fine of 418,000 colones, there isn’t a way to punish those responsible because there is not a regulation.

Advertising companies receive millions of colones each year by placing advertising in public spaces and they do it for free.

According to the Department of Inspections and Demolitions, the law would allow the MOPT and municipalities to receive incomes from the placement of advertisements in public spaces.
