A bill aims to stop the environmental damage in Manuel Antonio National Park

September 13, 2016 by Staff News Writer

A bill aims to stop the environmental damage in Manuel Antonio National Park, located in Quepos, Puntarenas.

The initiative, presented by members of the Environmental Commission of the Congress, intends to protect the Naranjo River channel, by banning new hydroelectric projects and by granting concessions for the extraction of mineral materials for a 25-year period.

According to the proposal, the indiscriminate exploitation of the basin has a terrible impact on wetlands, mangroves, flora, fauna and marine corals due to the arrival of large amounts of sediment to the bottom of the basin.

The bill also includes the creation of a tourist route in the Naranjo River basin, which would cover the cantons of Tarrazú, Dota and Quepos.
