A committee is looking for funds to extract gold

July 20, 2016 by Staff News Writer

A group from Guanacaste created a committee along with Coonaprosal and Coopeoro to request a 15-million-colones financing loan to Banco Popular y Desarrollo Comunal in order to carry out a feasibility study to build a precious metals’ processing plant in Abangares.

According to Diego Matarrita, Coopeoro’s credits and savings manager, gold extraction is performed by Coopeoro in a very traditional way. Through the construction of the plant, they aim to perform a more efficient, legal and green activity.

Banco Popular explained that to finance this project, they issued some Geology and Mining General Directorate’s releases. They stated that, protected under Law 8904, mining activity to extract gold in Abangares can only be performed by traditional miners who are cooperative’s members.
