Chimirol School is located In Cerro Chirripó, in Pérez Zeledón, and it is the first Costa Rican carbon-neutral educational center.

How did they do it?

-In 2015, this school managed to use solar panels as a source of energy supply.
-The children received physics, music and plastic arts lessons in classrooms whose walls were built with 250 car and motorcycle tires.
-The school has biofiltration for the treatment of waste water from the sinks and the student dining room.
-They use waste materials to build furniture and decoration.
-They have a butterfly house.

We have a pond to collect rainwater and use it in the bathrooms,

said Giancarlo Calderón, a sixth-grade student.

Nazareth Delgado, a fourth-grade student, explained the strategies used to discard the paper.

In all the classrooms there is a box: we throw the sheets that we do not use and then we take them to another place to recycle them,

said the girl.

Another interesting fact is that they never buy flags, or paper, to decorate the building during school activities. The ornaments are made with bottles, boxes, discs and other great variety of waste material.
