A very curious, simple debate

March 31, 2017 by Staff News Writer

During the last debate organized by Radio Monumental, liberationist potential presidential candidates José María Figueres, Antonio Álvarez and Rolando González approached easy topics and always showed their differences, instead of just attacking themselves.

Human and fiscal right topics were not discussed. The 3 candidates were accused of presenting unclear ideas and not having concrete actions to carry them out in a possible government.

The three aspirants, in the absence of Aiza due to her father’s death, showed their differences, with the aggravating fact that once a winner has been defined, the PLN could be divided.

Rolando González asked Álvarez how to bring the party together once there is a candidate and if he would include his rivals in the campaign. Álvarez said that he considered himself an inclusive person and he was open to the idea of liberationists joining the campaign, but he added they should go beyond the party to allow those who are no longer part of the movement or people without political affiliation to join the campaign.

José María Figueres was clearer in this regard, assuring that he has not damaged the party and that once the convention ended, if he wins, he would not only add all the people but also the potential candidates.

Álvarez requested Gonzalez’ position in this matter, who replied that he felt he was able to speak about the unity of the PLN because he has never been part of any party dissent.

In addition, candidates talked about easier subjects: González took the banner of education; Álvarez referred to economic growth, and even questioned Figueres’ initiative of valuing capital gains through a 15% tax. Figueres’ counterattack was the environmental area, one of his strongest topics.
