A year ago, a Costa Rican couple disappeared when they were trying to reach America

November 16, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Since April 15th, 2015 no one has heard from Rafael Garbanzo and Edith Alfaro, a Costa Rican marriage that tried to reach the US by sea from the Bahamas.

Although their location is still a mystery, a new clue, that could explain everything, appeared on November 16th.

The Immigration Police and the Public Ministry arrested a man surnamed Barboza, known as ‘Coyote Chino’, who would have been the person in charge of carrying them up to the United States.

According to the police, after their disappearance, Barboza stopped offering Costa Rica-Panamá-Bahamas-Florida route to reach America.

Arcelio Alfaro, Edith’s sister, explained that a year ago they had hope, but now they are just waiting.

The Interpol published Garbanzo and Alfaro’s photos some months ago. They were last seen in Freeport, The Bahamas. They have 2 daughters, who live in America with an aunt.

According to the investigation, “Chino Coyote” charged up to 5 million colones to facilitate the illegal transfer to the United States. In many cases, migrants mortgaged homes or borrowed money for the trip.
