Abelino Esquivel asked for Minister’s resignation but now congratulates him

May 9, 2017 by Staff News Writer

In a matter of seven months, Legislator Abelino Esquivel, from Costa Rican Renovation, changed his mind about the work of Public Security Minister Gustavo Mata.

On September 26th, the legislator requested the resignation of the hierarch, after alleging a high increase in crime in the country.

However, on Tuesday he highlighted Mata’s work, congratulated him and offered him an apology.

In an address to the legislative plenary, the Christian legislator said that the management of citizen security is one of the issues in which the Government has rebounded and that the fight against drug trafficking and criminality has been overwhelming.

I congratulated the Minister because, together with Deputy Minister Juan José Andrade, they have done a good job,”

said Esquivel.

The press asked him what made him change his mind and this was his answer:

I think that having requested the resignation at the time served to get them started and do better work. I apologize for having asked for the resignation of the Minister in due course,”

explained the legislator.

Esquivel highlighted the work of the head of Public Security in the message he offered to refer to the third report of the work of President Luis Guillermo Solís.

Despite what the congressman said, official figures have shown an increase in homicides and drug trafficking in the country.
