10,332 Costa Ricans, mostly women, are benefiting from literacy programs which are enabling them to resume studies in youth or adulthood.
Many of them had never studied before: reading and writing were not activities of their daily lives.
However, while there are thousands of people who are in this condition, Costa Rica has one of the highest literacy rates in Central America. According to the latest report from the State of the Region, 98.1% of Costa Ricans are literate.
Marielos Alvarado, head of Youth and Adult Education from the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) said the institution has 4 adult literacy initiatives:
-Integrated Centers for Adult Education (Ciondea).
-Professional Institute for Community Education (IPEC).
-Offices and distance learning projects.
If you are interested in resuming your studies and be a part of these initiatives, please call 2257-3964 or 2255-2738.
