Aging happily is possible by adopting a healthy lifestyle

October 31, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Upon reaching old age, normally life gets quiet and there is no need to worry about schedules, so it is important to begin to use leisure time in recreational and healthy activities.

In order to have a better lifestyle, it is ideal that senior citizens have the opportunity to maintain a good health participating in community activities.

Social, mental and physical stimulation is vital to avoid isolation and physical inactivity that could be detrimental to the overall health of the elderly.

Recreational activities like going to the cinema, theater, reading or enrolling in classes of personal interest; as well as physical activities like swimming, dancing or walking, will contribute to the development of a happy old age because it contributes to the autonomy and independence of senior citizens and strengthens their self-esteem.

The National University, the University of Costa Rica and some recreational centers in different communities are offering a variety of activities for the enjoyment of the elderly, supported by CONAPAM.

Age should not be seen as a limitation. On the contrary, the old age must be valued and enjoyed without being afraid. There should be no difference between senior citizens and the rest of the population.
