Alligator found with embedded harpoon and machete wounds in the head

June 14, 2019 by Staff News Writer

On Thrusday morning, representatives of the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge in Los Chiles found a live alligator with a harpoon embedded in its torso.

José Duarte, park ranger told CRHoy.com that the animal was in the area of the Playuelas lagoon, with severe injuries as a result of the harpoon and machete wounds.

The officials carried out an operation in the area when they observed the alligator. It is believed that the harpoon had been in it for several days. The machete blows on it head were superficial, so the officials released him in a safe place.

According to Duarte, these types of weapons are used by illegal hunters who prowl the refuge, especially during these dates when the gaspar fish begin to spawn.
